"To Shake the Sleeping Self" by Jedidiah Jenkins

book review by Riley Burnham 12/19/2022

oh man so solid

thoroughly enjoyed this book; would actually read it again [possibly] as the audiobook's read by the author & goes quick [i listen at high-speed so even more quick]

the story of a bike journey from Oregon to Patagonia [South America]; full of experiences, contemplations, camaraderie, soul-searching, & more

one of the deepest aspects of the book was his on-the-fencedness about Christianity [faith], & details some conversations w/ his part-time companion who regards Jesus as essentially & likely fiction...

Jedidiah's relationship w/ his folks shines here, as both visit along his journey; having separated previously sometime after their notorious cross-USA walk [as newlyweds], whichin a book as written by Peter -- might be worth a read hehe

the experiences are powerful & memorable, as it gives a bird's eye view into a variety of countries & their unique perspectives/climates... Mexico City, Baja, Columbia, Chile, Argentina... many many

i actually became aware of Jenkins through the Rich Roll Podcast back in the day [shoutout!] & knew to read it when it crossed my Libby-path

so my takeaway: my desire to travel has been de facto rekindled, although the Covid nonsense/restrictions are bothersome & whimsical [it appears]; or certainly less predictable; so international will have to wait [& wait, perhaps]

anywho... it's nice to think about the difference in lifestyle & mindset when traveling via bike & improvising vs car + lodgings

also neat was to hear of the different critters elsewhere in the world [orange bees, wild dogs, cuscos, Andes condors, etc.]

highly highly recommendable
