1. transliterating (deciphering/sounding out the letters/pronunciation)

2. translating (understanding meaning of words, parts of words (compounding))

3. deeper comprehension; probably writing (which makes good practice FYI; i recommend poetry in your chosen language to hand-write [draw/copy] & transliterate [American English here] letter-by-letter; then sound-out/attempt to translate [comprehend] using available resources/guides)
